IFIUS EC meets to finalize registration period Milan 2009

Apr 07

This Wednesday, Thursday and Friday the IFIUS EC will meet at the General Secretariat in Antwerp to conclude the registration period for the Milan 2009 Games. It is already clear that for Milan 2009 the number of teams has increased strongly compared to former editions. Not only the new Golf and Pitch & Putt competition (10 teams) ensures this growth, also all the other competitions add to a total of 83 teams. Additionally, the IFIUS EC will discuss a number of informal participation requests from America, Asia, Europe and Africa, with the objectives to extend the number of participants, to increase the number of countries where the universities are located (24 at the moment) and to welcome for the first time teams from four continents.

Due to the prolongation of the registration deadline for the Milan 2009 Games until 27 March, the number of countries where the participating universities are located keeps increasing. In addition to other teams, the University of Tetova from FYR Macedonia and the Universidad Católica Silva Henríquez of Chilli are now added to the list. This results in a total of 24 different nationalities. Furthermore, the Games are experiencing an increase in the number of participants with already more than 70 university teams.

Record Number of Nationalities - Prolongation Registration Period 27 March 2009

Mar 02

The Federation is pleased with the registration figures for the Milan 2009 Games. On March 1st 2009, 65 teams already confirmed participation in the 11th World Interuniversity Games. Remarkable is the record number of 22 countries where the participating universities are located with teams from Uruguay, Panama, the United States, Bahrain, England, Qatar, France, Latvia, Slovakia, Croatia, the Russian Federation, Iran, Belgium, Romania, Italy, Spain, Kazakhstan, Georgia, Malaysia, Austria, Finland and Portugal.

But the Federation also expects a record number of participating teams as the registration period will be prolonged. This decision is based upon the fact that the official invitation for the Milan 2009 Games has only reached certain parts of the world, such as Asia and Africa, during the last couple of weeks. As a result the IFIUS Executive Committee decided to prolong the registration deadline for the Milan 2009 Games with one month to give each university in the world an equal opportunity to participate. The new final registration date has been set on 27 March 2009.
